RHK Ships 100th R9 Control System
TROY, MI February 17, 2014

RHK Technology, Inc. announced shipment of its 100th R9 Control System for Scanning Probe Microscopes. The latest in RHK’s long history of advances, R9 breaks new ground with its revolutionary design: a totally integrated AFM/STM single-box solution. R9 combines all-digital, ultra-fast, ultra-low-noise electronics with an interface tailored especially for SPM scientists.

Observing the 100-unit milestone, Adam Kollin, RHK President and driving force behind R9, said, “We’re very proud to achieve this so quickly. The number of R9 just keeps climbing, along with very positive feedback from nanotech researchers around the world. We built R9 to be the best and it’s proving so every day.”

R9 Product and Tech Support Manager Ken Kollin added, “Customers appreciate the unique depth of capability plus ease of use R9 provides. Soon we’ll add even more with free upgrades for deeper automation with LabVIEW and MATLAB, advanced drift correction, new spectroscopy modes, and additional PLLs and lock-in amplifiers.” To mark the milestone, RHK is holding live R9 Webinars and demonstrations world-wide.

RHK Technology, Inc. has hired Dr. Ryan Murdick as a Staff Scientist, further boosting its expertise and resources for innovative SPM products. Dr. Murdick brings over six years of hands-on experimental materials science experience, including measurement techniques, cryo-cooling applications, and semiconductor physics and nonlinear/ultrafast optics. He is already deeply involved with several breakthrough product-development projects at RHK.

Formerly with the University of Washington Nano-Optics Physics group, Dr. Murdick specialized in both non-linear optics and SPM. At UW he constructed a low temperature/high vacuum atomic force microscope (AFM) coupled to a pulsed infrared laser source for scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy.

His previous experience also includes PNNL, where he led the complex s-SNOM (apertureless) system project. He brought this project to completion two months ahead of schedule and 30% under budget. At PNNL he also led a successful project for cutting-edge preliminary measurements on metal oxides undergoing metal-to-insulator phase transitions.

Dr. Murdick earned his Ph.D. in Physics at Michigan State University in 2009.

RHK Technology, Inc. has hired Dr. Shengyong Qin as Staff Scientist, adding further expertise and in-depth, hands-on experience in LT SPM to RHK. Dr. Qin earned his PhD in Physics at the University of Texas at Austin in 2008, under supervision of Dr. Chih-Kang (Ken) Shih. Later he joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the renown Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences. There he was a primary operator of the RHK LT QuadraProbe for three years of intensive use in this very active user facility for nano-research.

Dr. Qin’s primary research areas have been focused on experimental study of nanoscale electronic and magnetic materials, including novel thin-film and nanostructure growth; nanoscale characterization with STM of structural, electronic and transport properties of semiconductor and metal nanostructures; exploration of novel quantum phenomena in thin metal films; and superconductivity in reduced dimensions.

Dr. Qin has published numerous peer-reviewed journals, written a book chapter as an invited author, and presented at many national scientific conferences papers.
