Job Title: Field Support Scientist ("FSS")
Location: RHK Technology, Troy, MI
Reports to: Director of Sales and Marketing
Job Type: Full-time, direct, exempt
 
Position Summary
  1. FSS acts as a trusted technical resource in the field and inside RHK, providing application and product support and training for existing and prospective customers and Sales channels to help grow sales revenue.
  2. Assist with Customer Technical Support internally at RHK via phone and email regarding software and hardware service and support.
  3. As a Sales resource, FSS collaborates and coordinates with Inside and Field Sales to target, prioritize, schedule, and follow up with contacts, and travels solo or with Sales.
  4. FSS utilizes in-depth knowledge and direct experience to proactively engage customers in the field and build confidence in and desire for our brand.
  5. FSS demonstrates products, provides training in certain product features, delivers technical presentations, assesses and compares needs and competing solutions, and assists with quotes and follow up to help close sales.
  6. Notes:
    • Whether FSS has direct responsibility for negotiation and sales depends on skills, experience, and assignment. FSS may be assigned a sales territory in addition to assisting other field salespeople.
    • FSS may share responsibility for ongoing customer service, internal technical support, installation, training, and repair with other in-house resources and departments.
    • Career path: Depending on skills, interests, and company needs, an individual FSS may move into other full-time roles. These include Sales (field or inside); Trainer; Service and Support (field or inside); or Engineering.

 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Serve as a technical resource in the field for Sales channels and for existing and prospective RHK customers.
  2. Serve as a technical support resource internally at RHK for customers and inside staff via phone, email, and personal contact on software, hardware, and operation matters.
  3. Schedule visits and manage travel to set and coordinate meetings and seminars to existing and prospective customer installations, in collaboration with Sales.
  4. Identify and help qualify and quantify prospective buyers for Sales to target. Assist with follow up on technical issues to help remove obstacles and objections.
  5. Promote RHK products and help grow sales revenue by identifying and showing features, benefits, advantages, and results of RHK products versus competing products.
  6. Discuss, demonstrate, support, and/or train customers on RHK products, either 1-on-1 or in user groups or seminars.
  7. Develop, provide, and deliver application, configuration, upgrade, and usage advice, direction, and tips.
  8. Create and deliver technical presentations about UHV SPM and RHK.
  9. Gather field information about user preferences, current and upcoming needs and applications, trends, competitors’ offerings, and users of competitors’ equipment to help identify vulnerabilities, guide product development, and target new customers.
  10. Assist with coverage and engage customers at trade shows, conferences, and exhibits.
  11. If assigned direct Sales responsibility: prospect, qualify, quote, follow up, negotiate, and close sales. Help coordinate installation, training, support, and service. Provide sales forecasts and sales activity reports to RHK management. Update RHK customer database.
  12. Other duties as assigned
 
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
  1. 2-4 years extensive hands-on use and operation of all aspects of SPM (scanning probe microscopes), and related hardware and software. UHV SPM and RHK brands and models preferred.
  2. Knowledge of and experience with other surface science analytical instruments.
  3. Knowledge of and experience with vacuum science (especially UHV), environment, and surface modification processes such as MBE.
  4. Experience in research environment such as university, national laboratory, or equivalent.
  5. Able to effectively demonstrate and support complex hardware and software.
  6. Ability to successfully manage multiple concurrent projects, and to think independently and strategically.
  7. Business and financial acumen to evaluate potential customer strategies.
  8. Sales skills and experience if assigned a sales territory: prospecting, assessing needs and drivers, written and verbal follow-up, negotiating, closing, and forecasting.
  9. Highly effective communication skills essential.
  10. Fluent spoken and written English; other languages desirable.
  11. Computer skills: MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, ACT!
  12. Citizenship: USA or status current and sufficient for ongoing work in USA and entry into national labs or similar facilities. Valid USA driver’s license.
  13. Physical requirements: able to operate high-precision equipment, standard office equipment and phones, and lift 40 pounds.
  14. Travel: airplane and automobile; primarily USA, some international.
 
Education:
  • Masters or PhD in physics, material or surface science, chemistry, electrical engineering, or related field.
