Integration: All heating and cooling components are integrated into the sample stage, not the sample holder - allowing access to all heating techniques without changing the sample.
1. Thermocouple leads connect to built-in TC on sample holder
2. Sapphire washers for sample thermal isolation
3. Tungsten filament or Quartz lamp
Temperature Measurment
Each variable temperature sample holder has a built-in thermocouple that connects to spring clamps when the sample holder is in position on the sample stage. Unlike other UHV SPMs, the thermocouple mounts directly to the sample for accurate sample temperature measurement and feedback control.
A second thermocouple is mounted to the copper center stage to allow the temperature of the stage to be monitored and a third thermocouple is mounted on the cryostat to monitor its temperature.
Thermal Isolation
Samples are mounted between sapphire washers, providing minimal thermal transfer to the sample holder during heating yet maximizing thermal transfer during cooling.
Sample heating and cooling can be combined to operate over a very wide temperature range. Water cooling (in lieu of LN2) can also be useful when working at high temperatures to minimize heating of the sample stage and thermal drift.
